Mirror Mirror

In our forest or desert past, did we ever really know what we looked like?  Or did we evaluate our looks based only on the accumulated reactions of others, or on our rippling visage in a blue lake?  To what extent has the invention of the mirror, therefore, changed our own self-perception, and moved it in a direction foreign to our forebears?
